We believe active management is essential to achieving timberland investment objectives. Through the purposeful application of forest management, we are able to greatly affect the growth and development of each timber stand. It allows us to manipulate timberland portfolios to optimize both the economic and environmental production of the forest.
RMS employs proven forest management practices to improve the productivity of the plantations we manage. Primary among these practices is the deployment of selectively bred seedlings, application of herbicides to control herbaceous and woody competition, amelioration of soil conditions that limit tree root development, and the addition of nutrients through forest fertilization.
In all cases, these silvicultural treatments are analyzed to ensure that they meet minimum target return requirements. RMS combines extensive participation in cooperative research groups, internal staff expertise, and a rigorous focus on technology transfer to capture opportunities which add value through intensive plantation management. In addition to increasing both the quantity and quality of the timber in our clients’ forests, actively managed forests are more resistant to natural hazards (fire, pests, disease, wind damage), significantly reducing risk.
Actively managed forests can produce stronger returns to our investors through higher productivity and reduced risk”
At RMS, we are proud of the dedicated and highly specialized team which allows us to achieve this level of active management. RMS fosters a collaborative atmosphere in which members from each team can work together on a number of projects and in a variety of roles in order to broaden their breath and depth of skills and knowledge.
This cross-functionality not only speaks to the strength and depth of RMS’s talent, but also to the philosophy of the common goal that is so important to our investors.
